clam shell quilt block

clamshell block

I have been in love with clam shell quilts for a very long time.  The V & A has a wonderful 4 poster bed in its collection that has curtains made from hand pieced clam shells and a true item of beauty.  This months challenge at LMQG has been to made a traditional quilt block with a new modern interpretation.

My shells are made from a fat 8th bundle of Earth Platinum Oakshott cottons, backed with bondaweb and will be eventually quilted into something!

I had an idea to make a giant clamshell quilt by hand, although I may well need a few years to complete that!  The tea cosy would be a much quicker project and if you click on the photo’s the details are very easy to follow.  Craftsy have a brilliant free pattern called Glam Clam, by Latifah Saafir – The Quilt Engineer.  Molly Flanders also has a brilliant tutorial on clamshells.  Have you ever made a clamshell quilt, or block?  Any tips of how you made yours?

  1. Well done, yours is lovely! I made a clamshell block last year – it was going to be a quilt but I quickly discovered that if you go even a bit wonky, it soon multiplies! Respect to the 17th century V&A four poster bed curtain makers!
